Physiotherapy for Sciatica in Didsbury, Manchester
Sciatica describes symptoms linked to irritation of the sciatic nerve, often including pain, tingling, numbness or weakness into the leg.
Overview
Sciatica refers to symptoms associated with irritation of the sciatic nerve or its nerve roots. It can be uncomfortable and worrying, but presentations vary and require individual assessment.
Symptoms
Pain may travel from the lower back or buttock into the leg and can occur with tingling, numbness or weakness. Symptoms may change with sitting, bending, coughing, walking or other movements.
Causes
Sciatica can occur when a nerve root is irritated or compressed, sometimes in association with a disc change or narrowing around the nerve. Symptoms are also influenced by inflammation, sensitivity and activity.
Assessment
Assessment may include questions about the distribution and behaviour of symptoms, a neurological screen, movement testing and consideration of activities that aggravate or ease the problem.
How we help
Physiotherapy can support understanding of the symptoms, positions or activities that may help, and gradual rehabilitation. Treatment may include exercise, movement advice and hands-on techniques where appropriate.
When to seek medical advice
Seek urgent medical assessment for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, rapidly worsening weakness, severe symptoms after significant trauma, or if you are otherwise acutely unwell. If you are unsure, contact an appropriate medical service.
